Y is for Youth...

Cinderella, dressed in yellow
Went upstairs to kiss her fellow
Made a mistake,
And kissed a snake.
How many doctors
Did it take?
1, 2, 3, 4, 5…

Memories of Youth!  Jump rope was always one of my favorite past times of youth.  There were so many rhymes that we would sing.  And of course as we got older we graduated to Double Dutch jump rope.  Fun Times!

Youth is a magical time, a time of innocence, not a care in the world.  We lived on a farm in Roselle, IL during my early years of youth. What great memories I have.

There were cornfields all around us and oh at the lightening bugs, what fun we had. There was a big hill that we would roll down and see who could roll the farthest.  Funny thing is the hill is not quite as big in the pictures as I thought it was.  There was an orchard out behind the house, which was where we always had our secret hiding place.  There was a big barn, maybe that is where my love for barns started, but we used to play up in the hayloft all the time.  We would climb the ladder up to the loft and of course I was not supposed to jump off in the cornhusks because I was too little, but my brother would let me.  One particular time our cousin Butch was visiting and of course I was tagging along.  We jumped off and I was right behind Tom and he turned around real quick.  His elbow caught me in the mouth and knocked my loose front teeth out.  Of course they were lost in the shucks, but after I told him I was going to tell Dad that he was letting me jump, needless to say, they found both of them.  Yes, I was spoiled, I admit it!

I loved being outside, my dog Penney and I would have races across the front lawn.  Every step I took he took.  When we would have the family over all of us cousins would play games and have relay races out front.  The older cousins had a secret club, and my cousin Debi and I thought we were so important.  They let us be toy soldiers, the guards at their door.  We would march back and forth with a play rifle slung over our shoulder chanting – We are toy soldiers, you can’t come in, you can’t come in.  We thought we were so important, not old enough to realize that was the way they kept us out.  I have so many memories of the farm and my youth!

This was the farmhouse. I loved that old house. It also had an upstairs and an attic.

See that hill behind me, it really was bigger than that when I was little.  lol.

X is for Xeriscape Gardens

There is a place in Springfield that I love to visit.  Almost any season you can find something in bloom.  Xeriscape Gardens is a photographer’s paradise. I have hundreds of pictures I have taken in the garden.  I will share some of them but first I want to give you a little background.

Our Xeriscape Demonstration Garden was established in 1992.  It is a volunteer project provided by the Springfield Master Gardeners.  They hope to demonstrate the efficient use of water in landscaping.  It is a beautiful place to walk around and relax right in the middle of town.

The garden is divided into three water use zones:  1) high water use which depends on frequent irrigation.  2) moderate water use which utilizes less irrigation.  3) low water use which needs no supplemental irrigation.

All of that is very interesting but I enjoy walking through the garden.  Here is a few of my pictures, they are not in any specific order.

I love capturing what God has given us!

W is for What A Night...

We had a wonderful time at The McKameys concert tonight. It was held at Grandview Baptist Church in Springfield. What a blessing! If you have never seen them in concert and you enjoy Southern Gospel music I highly recommend them. They are so full of life and in love with the Lord. They sing from the heart and feel what they are singing. Peggy gets so excited and hyper; you can’t help but feel her excitement.

They sing a lot of wonderful songs. One of my favorites is Right On Time. Here is the last verse and chorus of it:

 I struggle through life’s deserts
They were so hot and dry,
Until it seemed all hope was gone,
And I was sure to die…
And I wondered where was He?
Is He still a friend of mine?
 Then coming down the road
Was JESUS right on time!
 Just hold on my child,
Because He’s not too far away
And He knows your need before you pray
So when your feet are weary
From the mountain you have climbed,
Look ahead, here comes JESUS right on time!

Isn’t that how it is, at times life is rough and we wonder where He is, but if we can have faith and hold on He is right on time! He will never put more on us than we can handle. Praise God He is always right on time!

“…but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13b

Here is another one of my favorites it is about faith.  Listen  to the words. They are listed below.

 When Faith Steps In
When you call on one, who you cannot see
and you give Him your heart, for all eternity
That’s when faith begins!
When you turn away, from all your sin
And you trust in the Lord to cleanse you within,
That’s when, faith begins!
In childlike trust, you hold out your hand,
 Simply believing, salvation’s plan!
When you feel you can’t go another day
But still somehow, you kneel down and pray,
That’s when faith steps in!
When all seems lost, there’s no hope in sight,
But still you sing, on through the night,
That’s when, faith steps in!
Faith brings joy and peace,  in the midst of a storm!
It sends out a lifeline, when you’re tossed and worn!
When you say goodbye to your dearest friends
And through tear filled eyes, you say I’ll see them again!
That’s when faith steps in!
When you take your last breath, in this world down here,
And you close your eyes without any fear,
That’s when faith steps in!
Faith will carry you where feet have never trod!
Safely to Heaven, into the arms of God!
When you open your eyes, to that Heavenly scene,
And you realize, it isn't a dream!
That’s when faith will end!
When you gaze on Him, face to face,
And you rest in His, sweet embrace,
 That’s when faith will end!

And What A Day That Will Be!

V is for Victory...

The bases are loaded, there are two outs, and the young man at home plate is feeling the tension.  He grips the bat and prays that it is a home run, usually his hits are caught on a fly, which means an automatic out.  But today is different he feels it, the ball comes toward him and he swings with all his might, and for a second he is frozen in place.  Everyone starts yelling Run, Run, and that he does, first base, second, third and he slides into home as the ball is in the air sailing toward the catcher.  But his foot is on the base before the ball is caught, yes folks that is victory!

The young kids are at the ball field, their first game ever.  They don’t really keep score but they will one of these days.  The little boy on first base is picking up rocks and the girl on second is pulling dandelions and blowing the fuzzies all over. The little girl goes up to home plate and moves back a little, waiting for her coach to place the ball on the tee.  The coach gives her a few reassuring words and gets her hands adjusted on the bat.  He tells her okay, keep your eye on the ball, and she swings and hits the ball.  Folks that is victory!

According to the online free dictionary the word victory means: 1) Defeat of an enemy or opponent; 2) Success in a struggle against difficulties or an obstacle; 3) The state of having triumphed.  Looking at the definition it is easy to see how the two examples above qualify as victories.  In our world there are a lot of things that would qualify as victories, any kind of competition, wars, job interviews, the list goes on and on.

In this world we have an enemy that we are faced with every day, but through faith and belief in Jesus Christ we can have victory even over the devil.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” 1 Peter 5:8

“For whatsoever is born of this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.  Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus Christ is the Son of God?”  1 John 5:4-5

Victory In Jesus

I heard an old, old story,
How a Savior came from glory,
How He gave His life on Calvary
To save a wretch like me;
I heard about His groaning,
Of His precious blood’s atoning,
Then I repented of my sins
And won the victory!

I heard about a mansion
He has built for me in glory,
And I heard about the streets of gold
Beyond the crystal sea;
About the angels singing,
And the old redemption story,
And some sweet day I’ll sing up there
The song of victory.

O victory in Jesus, My Savior, forever,
He sought me and bo’t me
 With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him
He plunged me to victory,
Beneath the cleansing flood.

Now that is Victory!  Amen!

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."  John 3:16

Hodgepodge Act #75...

Time for the Hodgepodge, if you would like to join in click on Joyce's button above and have fun. It is a lot of fun and you meet all kinds of new people.

1. William Shakespeare's birthday is celebrated on April 23rd...when did you last read Shakespeare? What's your favorite Shakespeare play?
I think we might have read MacBeth in high school, so decades ago.  Probably Romeo & Juliet is my favorite play.

2. What food(s) would you recommend a foreign visitor try when they visit your home country?
I have no idea; wow you are making the brain work Joyce.  I have lived in the south most my life so let’s go southern; fried potatoes, pinto beans maybe deer meat and cornbread.  Or no wait chocolate gravy and biscuits. Lolol.

3. What's a lie you often tell yourself?
I will get that done tomorrow…  Queen of Procrastination remember?

4. What's something you're good at that might surprise us? Remember this is a family friendly blog!
Let’s see how about sewing.  I have been sewing since I was in 7th grade.  When I was in high school I made my 3 nephews a pair of slacks and a short waisted jacket for Christmas and they fit.  If I cannot find the exact pattern I like I have been known to take 2 or 3 and make my own pattern.  Here is my nephew Jim with his on.

5. Who is your favorite animal character from a book?
Lassie was always my favorite or Rin Tin Tin.  Loved those two dogs!

6. April showers bring May flowers...do you have a green thumb?
Not so much anymore.  Patt takes care of all that here.

7. Speaking of rainy days...which one of the following activities would you most want to spend time doing on a rainy day-
Rainy days are good days to read a good book or sort photos and create albums.  I need to do that with my mom's old photos.  I want to scan them.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
We are going to see The McKameys a Southern Gospel Group in concert at one of the churches here in Springfield tonight.  We seen them in Branson, they are so good. Should be fun!   We are also headed to Kansas City this Friday.  Stan has to do an election count for the Union and I get to tag along.  We will spend the night then come home on Saturday.  It will be nice to get away for a night.

U is for Uncle...

Uncle Covie that is. It is funny when you look back over your life there are always people that stick out, people that touched your life in one way or another. Whether it is aunts or uncles or other acquaintances, they just will always hold a special place in your heart.

Uncle Covie is one who holds that place in my life. He was my mom’s older brother. There were two years between them and I think they were best buds growing up. Uncle Covie was quite eccentric. The best way to describe him is he would of fit right into some of the old westerns. Most times you could find him with his jeans, cowboy boots and a gun and holster strapped to his side, especially if he was at home.

He lived in a house that by most people’s measures was a shack. In 1979 when I stayed with them there still was no indoor plumbing. The outhouse was at the back of the yard and the well where you had to draw the water up was outside the back door. You could actually feel the air coming through some of the cracks in the walls. During cold weather the wood burning stove in the front room was always stoked.  My aunt begged him to build a new house, but he was happy where he was. You see it was more than a house it was a home and you could feel the warmth and the love when you stepped inside.

He was quite a character; he loved to tell stories and pull jokes. When we were kids he used to stick a firecracker in a piece of cornbread, light it and throw it out to the chickens. You should have heard the ruckus when it would go off, and my aunt would yell Covie what are you doing now. When my nephew was little Uncle Covie had promised him when we got to his house he could ride his horse, it was dark when we got there and Jim was disappointed. Uncle Covie went and got the horse and brought him in the house so Jim could ride him. I really thought Aunt Vada was going to kill him that time. He was always doing something. He was known to make moonshine out in his shed something that his dad was also known for. One time in the early 70’s when he flew to IL to visit he brought 2-glass 7-up bottles in a cardboard carrier on the plane. Needless to say his moonshine was in those litre bottles not 7-up.

Some of my best memories took place at his home. We had a lot of long talks especially when I was staying with them. He pointed out how the most important thing to so many people were material things, always trying to outdo each other. But what really counted was what was inside, what you felt with the heart, how you treated other people, that’s what was important. That is why he was loved and known wherever he went.

I could go on an on with stories and memories but I think you get the picture. He was a pretty special man in my book! He left this world in 1984 and what a legacy he left.

T is for Thanks

There are so many things we can be thankful for it would take forever to list them, but I want to share something special that I will never forget.

As most of you know I was not brought up in a Christian home. It was a good home, there was no drinking, or fighting, and there was a lot of love, but it was not a Christian home. I thank my parents every day for the love of others that they instilled in me, even though I was not really exposed to religious beliefs. My daughter was around 6 years old when I finally accepted Christ as my Personal Savior. But let’s go back a little farther than that.

After a few months of living in Arkansas I finally found an office job I was happy with. There were a couple of ladies that were around my age. One (A) like me had lived life in the fast lane; the other one (C) was a Christian. We made quite a threesome; we laughed a lot and enjoyed life. At times C would just shake her head and say what am I going to do with you two.

I remember one particular day, mind you this was about 32 years ago, but I still remember it like it was yesterday. The three of us were sitting in the break room enjoying our lunch discussing life in general. A and I were talking about parties and what we liked to drink. I remember A asking C what she liked to drink and she said tea, and A said no I mean what do you like when you are having a drink. And C said tea, and A replied you mean you don’t drink anything else. She answered No. A and I kinda laughed and I asked, Gosh C what rock did you crawl out from under? A and I were both laughing. Without blinking an eye or hesitating she answered “The biggest rock there is, Jesus Christ!” Wow, we stopped laughing immediately and just sat there speechless. I still remember feeling an aura for lack of a better word around her. It was like she was untouchable. From then on A and I acted different when we were around C. We didn’t treat her any different, we were all still good friends, but it was like we respected her more.

That particular day replayed in my mind a lot, but me being the stubborn rebel I was it was 8 years before I gave my life to the Lord. You know we never know how what we say affects people. C never knew till years later what an impact she had on me when I told her Thank-you. The three of us never enjoyed church together, but A and I sat in several services together. What a Blessing!

I thank the Lord every day for saving my soul and pulling me out of the sinful life I was in. I thank those who prayed for me for so many years. God is so good!

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."  1 John 1:9

S is for Stanley

Once upon a time there were two people who became friends over the World Wide Web. He lived in Missouri and she lived in Arkansas. They talked, laughed and encouraged each other online. They truly enjoyed each other’s friendship.

One night she informed him she would not be online due to a trip she was taking with her cousin Kathy to Eureka Springs. He immediately replied that is not very far why don’t I come down and take you ladies out to dinner. She kind of got quiet and stammered a little and finally replied, Okay if you really want to.  She felt she was pretty safe, he was still recovering from knee surgery so she figured she could outrun him if she had to.  Needless to say she did not have to run... and the rest is history.

Stan was a breath of fresh air to me. He was such a gentleman and truly knew how to treat us like ladies. We dated for a year before we married, long distance relationships can be hard at times, but we never had any problems.

Stanley treats me like a Queen (not of Procrastination) lol, he is so good to me. He makes me laugh and reminds me all the time how much he loves me. He understands me and still loves me. He loves my daughter and her family like they were his own and that means a lot to this momma. And he loves our Father in Heaven!

We are so good together and I thank God every day for him. I know he is the answer to my prayers! We will be married 6 years this September and he still gives me cold chills when he walks up behind me.  I love you Stanley!

R is for Retirement no I mean Replacement!

It is funny last night I started to do my R post, knew what I was going to do it on, had it all planned out but just couldn’t get it on paper. Lol. Maybe the problem was I needed to put my heart in it, literally put my heart in it. Yes, the letter R went from Retirement to Replacement.

Today I had an appointment for a pacemaker check and a consultation with the cardiologist. We knew it was getting close to replacement time for my 10-year-old pacemaker; 6 weeks ago it showed 3 to 9 months longevity. Today when I went for my assessment it showed that it had switched over to standby mode the same day it was checked last month. They assured me this was not uncommon. A pacemaker usually has 90 days built in for back up. When it goes to standby mode it will still work if needed however it is not recording any episodes or anything. That means I have already used 48 days of my built in 90 days. So guess what – May 1st Replacement of the generator portion of the pacemaker. It will be outpatient surgery. The doctor is almost certain the leads or wires going into my heart will be fine, of course there is that chance that she might see something when she gets inside. I am praying and believing there will not be any problems and everything will go smoothly.

I have been very lucky with my pacemaker. It has never given me any problems and it has had a good life. They predicted it would last 5 – 7 years when it was put in, however mine is only used 27% of the time. April 30th will be 10 years. Praise the Lord!

"The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace."  Psalm 29:11

Q is for Queen...

Queen of Procrastination that is! According to dictionary.com website procrastination is a noun and means: the act or habit of procrastinating, or putting off or delaying, especially something requiring immediate attention.

Yes at times, well most of the time I have been known to procrastinate. I tend to wait till the last minute to get things done. For example: When Stan and I married, I wanted a church wedding with friends since I did not have that the first time. I made my wedding dress, but I finished it the day before we married. I think he was a little nervous; I on the other hand had no problem with it. I knew I would get it done; all I had to do was hem it.

What can I say I work better under pressure! I am better than I used to be on most things, but perhaps that is because I am married to the King of Procrastination. Lol.  We tend to keep each other in line and get the important things done.

P is for Precious Moments...

We all have moments that are precious to us, I know I do and I could go on and on about them. Today though I am going to write about a different type of Precious Moments. Actually I am going to share about the Precious Moments Collection.

A little History about Precious Moments: Sam Butcher started drawing the tear dropped eye children as gifts for family and friends. In the early 70’s he and a friend started a line of greeting cards and posters under the company name Jonathan & David. They attended a convention in California for the Christian Booksellers Association and they were a hit. Enesco, Inc. approached Sam, wanting him to develop a figurine depicting one of his pictures entitled “Love One Another” shortly after. By 1978 the first 21 original figurines were introduced to the market, the demand was overwhelming, and the rest is history. For more information go to the Precious Moments website.

I have always loved going into the Hallmark shops to look at the Precious Moments Figurines (PMs). They are all so cute, but something I just always dreamed about. When I married Stan little did I know he had an extensive inventory of PMs. In previous years him and his wife (before she got sick) frequented flea markets and sales setting up their PMs. They also sold them on E-bay. At that time the market was still up, unfortunately now the market is flooded with PMs, so the prices are down compared to 15 years ago. I really did not know a lot about the figurines, but I have learned quite a bit over the last few years. We inventoried our PMs and we have over 1,000 pieces. We have been listing them periodically on E-bay under All-Ways Precious. All of our pieces are older and retired; we also have a few Original 21 pieces. We would eventually like to set up an online store with these also. We are listed as an Secondary Market Seller with the Precious Moments Gift Shop in Carthage, MO. Each figurine has a mark on the bottom that represents the year in was produced. The No Mark pieces indicate that it was produced before 1981. There are a few unmarked special pieces.  Here are the Original 21 that we have in stock, part of them are No Marks:

Springing into Hodgepodge...

1. Spring is in the air (at least in my neck of the woods) and the birds are singing...what's your favorite bird?
I don’t know if I really have a favorite. I love the little wrens. For the last 3 years a couple of wrens have made their nest in a birdhouse that we have on our porch. They sound so pretty when they are talking to each other. And after the little ones have hatched they sure can make a ruckus. We get an Indigo Bunting at times during the summer and they are beautiful and of course cardinals all year round.
2. Speaking of birds...do you tweet? If so tell us your screen name and we'll come flocking to your Twitter site. Even if you don't let's all pretend here that we do-in 140 characters or less, sum up your week so far.
No I do not tweet. Summary – Great church service. Busy week. Doctor’s check up & cardiologist. Keeping up w/ A-Z. Missing kid and grands. Enjoying life.

3. Its been reported recently that employers are not only viewing the facebook pages of potential hires but they're also requesting your facebook password to have a look at what you've kept from public view. What say you?
Sorry, there is a limit. I can understand to a certain extent them viewing the public facebook page but no one has a right to your password unless you give it to them.

4. It's April and you know what that means-Major League Baseball is back in action. What's your favorite baseball movie? If that's too hard, what's your favorite sports themed movie?
My favorite is “Field of Dreams” build it they will come! I love that movie! Sport’s themed would be “Blindside.” If you have not seen that one you need too!

5. Something else this season brings-asparagus. Yes please or no thanks? If it's yes please what's your favorite way to have it prepared?
No thanks… actually I have only tried it once or twice and it was okay.  I think my SIL  steamed it and it was pretty good.

6. What drives you? (Don't you love how I sandwiched that one in between asparagus and jugglers???)
I think loving life! God has given us so much how can we not be driven!

7. April 18th is International Jugglers Day...can you juggle?
If we are talking throwing things up in the air and catching them - not so much. I guess it depends on what you’re juggling. I always have several things going on at the same time so I guess that is a form of juggling. Lol.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
I love this time of year! Nothing like Spring and new beginnings and fresh starts. I get so excited with the flowers blooming and the birds singing. A perfect time to enjoy what God has given us!

O is for Orange Crush Ice Cream and...

I was at kind of a loss for the letter O and then I remembered. I remembered what a dear friend used to make at the Ice Cream Socials at church. Orange Crush Ice cream. If you have never tried it, it is a must and talk about easy!

Orange Crush Ice cream
1 – 2ltr bottle of Orange Crush
2 – cans of sweetened evaporated milk

Mix together well and pour into your freezer. Freeze as usual. Talk about good! It is very good served with sugar wafer cookies, pound cake or by itself.

My partner in crime, one of my besties, my cousin Kathy used to make us a dish of Oreo Ice cream when she was house sitting before I remarried. And as much as I hate to admit it we would usually polish it off in a weekend amidst the laughter and ex-husband bashing.  She was divorced also.  We did enjoy our visits!
This concoction is very tasty and easy to do. You probably have tried it before.

Oreo Ice Cream
1 – ½ gallon carton vanilla ice cream
1 pkg of Oreos

Remove the ice cream and place it in a large bowl. Let it get soft and easy to stir. Meanwhile place the Oreos in a zip lock bag and seal. Crush the Oreos. When the ice cream has softened pour the Oreos in and stir well. Now pour the mixture in a 9 x 13 glass dish. Place in the freezer and let it refreeze. At times it is hard to get out of the dish, but believe me it is worth the trouble. Good stuff!

I think I need to go get some vanilla ice cream and Oreos, see you later!

N is for NFast Photos...

Yes I have a dream, NFast Photos. I love to take photos, that is one of my many passions. I love capturing what God has given us to enjoy. There are so many things that so many people take for granted. I have thousands of pictures I have taken over the last three years. It’s almost as if everything I look at my mind is processing wondering how that would look in a picture, or perhaps an enlargement, or a greeting card. I know it is a sickness. Lol.

My dream is in it’s beginning stages. In March I placed a card rack in Village Flowers & Mercantile/ Back Porch Tea House at Willard MO with 96 different cards. It is a cute little shop here in our town. If you are ever in the area make sure you check it out, you won’t be disappointed. In May I will be placing another rack at my daughter’s cake shop in Russellville, Sugar Shack. Eventually I would like to set up a store online. I did have them on a blog, but it just did not work out like I wanted it too. All of the cards are blank on the inside for your own personalization. All of the photos are signed and a description is on the back of the card.
Below are few examples of the some of the cards.
