I is for Idolatry
Merriam-Webster Online
Dictionary defines idolatry as:
1: the worship of a physical object as a god
2: immoderate
attachment or devotion to something
The Webster’s
Desk dictionary defines it as:
1. the religious worship of idols.
2.
blind adoration or devotion
We see so much of this in
our world today. People get so caught
up in this before they realize it. Even
such things as money, fame, work or pleasure can become gods to us, or idols,
when we concentrate too much on them for meaning and security. Before we realize it we are worshipping
these things, and putting them before God.
The 10 Commandments
include:
‘Thou shalt have no other
gods before me. Thou shalt not make
unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven
above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the
earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them:’
Exodus 20:3, 4, 5a
‘Little children, keep
yourselves from idols. Amen’ 1 John
5:21
‘He that overcometh shall
inherit all things; and I will be his God and he shall be my son. But the
fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers,
and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake
which burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.’ Revelation 21:7-8

ReplyDeleteI agree with Tara. I'm so inspired by your posts! Thank you—and thanks, too, for reading my haiku. That means a lot. ☺
ReplyDeleteHi Nel ~~ I love these inspirational posts which go through the Bible. They should make excellent devotionals. I will come back for more.
ReplyDeleteRight now I am paying Ceasar by getting my income tax done. I use Turbo Tax so it will be fairly easy if I have found all the documentation that I need.

Good topic. It seems like people easily attach themselves to things, especially money. Although remaining detached might prove difficult, it's certainly better for the soul.
ReplyDeleteHave fun with a-z.
